Internet Round Up #7 – Ted Talks

Hello everyone! I come to you today from my formidable blanket fort! Today is my first real day off in a few weeks and I am enjoying every minute of it before I head back to the trenches tomorrow.

Ted

TED: Ideas Worth Spreading is a website where you can find videos covering just about any topic you could want! Many talks cover subjects that directly influence our lives today and what the future holds in videos from a few minutes long to over a half hour. TED talks can help us understand ourselves and others better, or simply entertain us, like one of my favorite talks, Mathemagic.

If you aren’t sure where to start or specific videos that you want to watch, TED has a wonderful playlist builder called Surprise Me where you can select one of eight adjectives, such as Inspirational or Jaw-dropping, that you would like the TED talks to be as well as how long you would like the playlist to be, from 5 to 60 minutes.

The TED website also has a list of popular playlists including 11 Must-See TED Talks, 5 Talks to Cheer you up on a Bad Day, How do we make Choices, and so many more. TED.com is one of the top sites that I go to when I need a boost, some intellectual stimulation or to be amazed by some new technology.

Internet Round Up #6 – Favorite BookTubers

Hello everyone! It has been a crazy couple of weeks so apologies for the lack of posts. I am turning off my phone today and going on a blog post marathon so you will have something to read over the next week or so 😀

We are continuing with the Internet Round Up and unveiling more of my favorite people on YouTube. Today I want to talk about some of my favorite BookTubers and one Book Club channel. All of these creators are bubbly, fun to watch, and of course give great book reviews and recommendations. They have all caused me to either add a bunch of books to my wish list or actually go out and purchase a book that I MUST READ RIGHT NOW!!! In no particular order 1. Read by Zoe (YouTube Channel) Zoe is pretty new to the BookTube community but I feel like she is going to continue rising quickly. She already has over 7,000 subscribers but I can see her rising to become one of the top BookTubers. She is hilarious and I really enjoyed all of her 2014 BookTube-a-thon updates(I will talk about the 2014 BookTube-a-thon in tomorrow’s post)! The first video she posted – The Dangers of Reading – made me laugh so hard and I added it to this week’s Internet Round Up even though it was posted over a month ago. It’s just that good! 2. Malaray of Sunshine (YouTube Channel) Mallory is also pretty new to the BookTube community but I love her bright and sparkling personality and honest reviews of all of the books she reads. If she is frustrated or not happy with a book, she will tell you. If she is over the moon, loving a book, she will let you know. I love it! 3. Books and Quills (YouTube Channel) Sanne is a Dutch bibliophile currently working in London. She enjoys “reading classics, dystopian/apocalyptic novels, sci-fi and a variety of graphic novels, YA and contemporary literary fiction.”  I love Sanne’s in-depth book reviews, her accent, and she posts a lot of creative book tags! 4. Lindsay Hearts Books (YouTube Channel) You will see lots of links back to Lindsay’s videos in the future because she does some very interesting tag videos that will be easy to translate to a blog post! She is very calming and wonderful to watch. 5. Answerly (YouTube Channel) This is the book club channel. On Mondays, Hayley covers a book that has been written by a women. So far she has covered: Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider How to Disappear Completely by Kelsey Osgood Hayley is currently covering Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman. On Wednesdays, Joe covers humor books. So far he has covered: Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling Let’s Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson I Was Told There’d Be Cake by Sloane Crosley. Joe is currently reading Self-Inflicted Wounds by Aisha Tyler. On Fridays, Kristina covered Young Adult books. So far she has covered: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell The Coldest Girl in Coldtown by Holly Black Beauty Queens by Libba Bray Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell Kristina is currently covering Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs.  Kristina also has her own channel and recently participated in the 2014 BookTube-a-thon and is planning on posting more book-related videos. I would definitely recommending following her as well! I’ll link her channel here. INTERNET ROUND UP #6

Beauty Gurus on YouTube

Hello everyone!!! I have missed you guys 🙂 I am finally back where there is functional Wi-Fi and I have a functioning laptop! My brother accidentally took my computer charger home with him from vacation and I just got it back today. Hello glorious laptop and proper internet! I have missed you dearly!
It took me a solid two days to catch up on all things YouTube after I got home from vacation. Luckily I had three days off from work before I went back so I had the time to get caught up, even if my phone took longer to buffer than it did to play all of the videos.
Today I wanted to cover my top Beauty channel picks from YouTube. I LOVE the beauty gurus on YouTube and I am always on the hunt for more awesome channels to follow so if you have some favorites that you don’t see listed here, make sure to leave them in the comments below. Feed my YouTube addiction 😀

Beauty

In no particular order:

1. EssieButton – (link here)
Oh Estee. She is such a burst of positive energy and happiness and I absolutely adore her videos. She is originally from Canada and is currently living in England with her boyfriend Aslan. During all of her hauls and monthly favorites, I will always see at least one new product that I end up purchasing and, 9 times out of 10, loving. Estee has plenty of great tips and tricks and has many easy-to-replicate makeup and hair tutorials. She is bubbly, funny and someone you just want to hang out with!

2. Missglamorazzi (link here)
Ingrid is a down to earth girl and incredibly informative in her videos. I was just watching her Summer Date Look & Picnic Ideas video and there were little fact bubbles for all of the different products she used. They were either facts about the company or product or they were great tips such as putting your eye gel in the fridge for a great cooling sensation when you put it on! Ingrid’s channel is wonderful not only for her beauty and fashion videos, but also for her DIY and food videos!

3. Tanya Burr (link here)
Tanya Burr is one of the most bubbly and happy people I have ever seen on YouTube. I just want to hug her and have a movie night with her. She is also incredibly talented at creating different makeup looks and putting together some very fun outfits. Tanya recently launched her own line of makeup products – lip glosses and nail polishes. I still need to track them down and give them a test run. Tanya’s channel also has many non-beauty videos and I love watching her.

4. All Things Hair UK (link here)
I recently found this channel and it is AWESOME! The videos feature many of the most prominent beauty gurus from the UK including Estee (Essiebutton), Tanya Burr, Zoella, Ruth and many others. They have how to videos for every hair type and creating all different kinds of hair styles. Definitely a good one to subscribe to if you are looking for some hair inspiration!

5. Fleur DeForce (link here)
My wallet needs to hide everytime I watch one of Fleur’s videos. Her haul videos, monthly favorites, empties, etc. ALWAYS make me want to go purchase things! Her reviews are honest, funny and very informative. Also she is gorgeous and all of her get ready with me-type videos are just beautiful. Seriously, hide your credit cards and cash when you watch her videos.

6. Meghan Rienks/Meghan Rosette (link here)
Meghan is a bundle of energy and so much fun to watch. She has a more bohemian look and her get ready with me videos are so well done. She has a very quirky and fun personality and is unapologetically herself! Her makeup videos are amazing and I have learned a lot from watching her. I always feel happier and better about life after watching one of her videos.

7. ViviannaDoesMakeup (link here)
I love watching Anna because she posts lots of different kinds videos, including a new 101 series which she kicked off with Fake Tanning 101. She does her best to give you lots of tips and tricks – one of my favorite videos being Multi-Tasking Beauty Bits. Anna also posts lots of fashion videos and I really like her style.

Internet Round Up #3 – Web Comics

Hello everyone! I hope you are enjoying your weekend 🙂 Today I want to talk about two of my favorite web comics that I follow. Both are relatively new to me but once I read a couple of the comics, I went back and read all of them from the very beginning. I will do a few posts on some other web comics that I follow but Girls with Slingshots and Rock, Paper, Cynic had to be featured first. I hope you enjoy them!

GIRLS WITH SLINGSHOTSgirlswithslingshots.com
Creator  Danielle Corsetto
Updates
 – Monday – Friday
Overview – Hazel and Jamie are best friends. Hazel has a love/hate relationship with feelings. She loves to stick them in a box and lock them up because she hates them so much. She would much rather drink all the booze in the world. Jamie on the other hand is full of warm fuzzies and is there for Hazel through every stupid thing she does or just to sit at the bar and drink with her. The comic follows these two best friends and a slew of their other friends and acquaintances as they navigate through all the problems and crazy antics that today’s twenty-somethings get into. (Being a twenty three year old, I know these antics well :D) Oh…there is also a talking cactus named McPedro and he has a fantastic mustache.
This web comic never fails to make me smile, laugh (many times bursting out loud and getting strange looks from people), head desk and feel a whole range of emotions. A couple months ago, I binge read this comic (As of writing this, Danielle is on strip #1869) in about 2 1/2 weeks and I hungrily wait for new comics as they come out every weekday. Danielle is currently taking a quick break as she prepares for her tour “Slingshot Across America” and will have some fellow artists doing guest strips while she is gone. I highly suggest you check this comic out but make sure to start from the beginning otherwise you will probably be a little lost.

rock paper cynic

Rock, Paper, Cynic – rockpapercynic.com
Creator – Peter Chiykowski
Updates – Weekly
Overview – Most of the web comics that Peter creates are stand alone so you don’t have to start from the beginning in order to understand them. I shall let Peter describe Rock, Paper, Cynic in his own words.
“I write Rock, Paper, Cynic—a webcomic for people who think too much and too little. It’s all about celebrating things that make the world weird and exciting (like turtles, philosophy, and dinosaurs) and poking fun at things that bring people down (like bigotry, Sean Bean dying in movies, and Internet Explorer).”
You will see everything from comics about Game of Thrones and Mario Kart to An Apology Letter to T Rexes and The Only Responsible Use of Physics (click on the links if you would like to see those). I have printed out several of these comics and decorated my desk at work with them because they make the world a little bit brighter and definitely make me laugh. If I had to pick one to showcase the pure awesome that is Rock, Paper, Cynic, I would have to choose this one here. It may or may not have to do with the most epic way to destroy the world.

Side note – I actually got to meet both of these creators at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival this past May and it was AMAZING. They were both very nice and I was able to have some awesome conversions and pick up some signed comics! It was basically like walking around in Nerd Heaven. If you haven’t been to any kind of Comic Con or Comic Arts Festival, I would highly encourage you to do so if you are interested 🙂

Let me know in the comments below any web comics you enjoy that I should check out!

Internet Round Up #2 – Foodbeast

*The Internet Round Up Youtube playlist is at the end of the post 🙂

foodbeast

This week’s featured website on website round up is Foodbeast.com.  A coworker introduced me to this website a couple months ago and it has quickly become one of my favorites. Foodbeast is “the premiere food news resource. A one-stop location for food news, culture and entertainment. Birthed from a small apartment in Orange County, with the goal of providing a clean display of current food trends, products and industry information. Written by and for the average eater. Because we’re hungry.”

Basically it’s a website that brings you news about all things food from all over world. Articles range from the science on why your breath stinks from garlic for hours to the latest food crazes and trends. They occasionally post some crazy recipes that leave me salivating and wanting to bake all the delicious things! The best one I have seen so far would have to be the Bacon Chocolate Guinness Challah Bread Pudding posted here.

My Top 5 favorite articles from this week are:

17 Unexpected Ways to Enjoy an AvocadoLink here. Have you ever tried making popsicles with avocado? I am a bit wary but I think sometime this summer I will give it a go and see how they turn out.

Restaurant issues Ban on Tipping, Compensates by giving Servers 20% of sales per shift. Link here. Being a former waitress I can see the good side of this. Unless the waiter or waitress goes out of their way and does something truly exceptional or awful, most people have their own set amounts that they tend to tip, if they tip at all. I can see both sides of how this might be a good or bad idea. What do you think about this policy?

13 Food & Drink Father’s Day Gifts that Will Guarantee You’re His Favorite ChildLink here. This post made me laugh. Even though most of the items are crazy expensive, there are some truly wacky gifts that a father would really appreciate. The espresso maker crafted from a real race car engine might be my favorite gift on there 🙂

Cooking Machine Lets Multiple Chefs Phone in Instructions for a Single DishLink here. This article and the video blew my mind. Oh technology. What will we come up with next? Also I REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY want to play with this machine!!!!

Company Designs ‘Urban Beehive’ for Your Home. What Could Go Wrong?Link here. But really though…what could go wrong? If you had the option, would you want one of these Urban Beehives? I don’t use honey enough to justify having one but I think it would be kind of neat!

Internet Round Up #1 – Youtube

Youtube logo

Oh YouTube. The corner of the internet where I spend the majority of my time while on my laptop.  I am subscribed to so many people right now, that if I miss two days, it takes me a solid 8+ hours to catch up. 140 subs and growing 😀

Someone once asked me if you could only have access to one site on the Internet for the rest of time, which one would you choose? My answer has been YouTube and probably will stay my answer for a long time. What other website do you have access to such diverse content? I can learn about the latest findings in space exploration, find advice on any topic, learn how to achieve the perfect smoky eye, laugh my butt off at some dare videos, watch the most extreme sports videos (think human skee ball), listen to all different genres of music, and be active in several communities that I genuinely care about.

ANYWAYS

Each week in Internet Round Up, I will have a link to a playlist of some of my favorite videos from the week, plus articles and other news from all over the Internet.  Some will be educational, others adorable, and some yet may leaving you gasping for air and wiping the tears from laughing so hard. Please let me know in the comments below what you think of the videos, any videos you liked from this week, channels I should follow, etc. Most importantly, tell me about the videos you would like to see! Depending on how this goes, I may split these up into categorized playlists but for now I like the grab bag. 🙂
